What Happened When Gay Men From New Jersey Visited Northlandz
Whether you look high or low, there is no other group quite like Garden State Gay Socials.
Founded on a simple but powerful belief, Garden State Gay Socials exists because many gay men are looking for something different. While bars, clubs, and dating apps certainly have their place, not every gay man wants his social life centered around those environments. Many of us are seeking genuine friendships, meaningful conversations, and experiences that let us connect with others in a relaxed, authentic way.
That is exactly why Garden State Gay Socials was created.
Our mission is simple: create welcoming spaces where gay men can build lasting friendships through shared experiences—our motto, Friendship First. Integrity Always.™ is more than a phrase. It is the foundation upon which every event, activity, and interaction is built.
Many men discover us while searching for a gay social group in New Jersey or looking for opportunities to meet other men outside of bars and apps. What they often find is something much deeper than a social calendar. They discover a community of men who value kindness, respect, integrity, and meaningful connection.
Recently, one of those experiences brought us to Northlandz in Flemington, New Jersey, for a memorable day filled with trains, laughter, nostalgia, teamwork, and friendship.
Why Friendship First Matters
In today's world, many people feel more connected digitally than ever before and yet more disconnected personally than ever before.
Dating apps make introductions easy.
Social media allows us to see what everyone else is doing.
Messaging apps allow instant communication.
Yet despite all of these tools, many gay men continue searching for something that feels increasingly difficult to find: authentic friendship.
Many men tell us they are looking for:
- Genuine friendships
- Shared interests
- Meaningful conversations
- Community
- Low-pressure social experiences
- Activities beyond nightlife
These needs are exactly why Garden State Gay Socials exists.
Unlike many organizations that focus primarily on entertainment or dating, our mission is to help men build meaningful relationships through shared experiences. Whether someone attends one of our upcoming gay social events in New Jersey, joins one of our popular breakfasts, participates in our growing collection of gay men's hikes in New Jersey, or joins a special day trip, the goal remains the same.
Create opportunities.
Start conversations.
Build friendships.
Strengthen community.
Why Gay Day Trips Work So Well
One of the newest additions to our growing calendar is Gay Day Trips for Men.
These experiences have quickly become popular because they provide something unique.
Unlike traditional social events, where everyone gathers in a room and tries to make conversation, day trips naturally foster interaction.
People explore together.
They discover new things together.
They solve problems together.
They share experiences.
Those experiences create opportunities for conversations that feel natural rather than forced.
Someone notices something interesting.
Someone asks a question.
Someone shares a memory.
Before long, conversations begin flowing naturally.
Many of the men who attend these trips are the same individuals who previously wondered where to meet gay men in New Jersey without apps. They quickly discover that shared experiences often lay a stronger foundation for friendship than endless online conversations.
Northlandz turned out to be a perfect example of this.
My Lifelong Fascination with Trains
Personally, trains have always held a special place in my life.
Since I was only three years old, I have been fascinated by them.
The sounds.
The movement.
The engineering.
The imagination.
Every holiday season, my parents would set up a train around the Christmas tree. I remember sitting on the floor watching it circle the track for what felt like hours.
Each year brought excitement.
Each year brought anticipation.
And each year brought another opportunity to expand the train layout.
Those memories remain vivid even decades later.
Many people have similar experiences.
Maybe it was trains.
Maybe it was model airplanes.
Maybe it was baseball cards.
Maybe it was cars.
Whatever the interest, those childhood passions often become connected to some of our happiest memories.
One thing that makes Garden State Gay Socials unique is our ability to create experiences where members can reconnect with those interests while sharing them with others who appreciate them.
Arriving at Northlandz
Early on Memorial Day Weekend, our group gathered in Flemington, New Jersey.
There was excitement from the moment people arrived.
Some members were longtime train enthusiasts.
Others had never visited Northlandz before.
Some wanted to spend time with other gay men in a welcoming environment.
Everyone arrived with slightly different expectations, but everyone shared a common goal: enjoying the experience together.
The staff at Northlandz greeted us warmly and helped us get settled into our private room before we began exploring.
As we approached the entrance, one of the attendants immediately made everyone smile.
"When I say green light, you go. When I say red light, you stop."
The playful interaction instantly broke the ice.
Laughter spread throughout the group.
The adventure had officially begun.
The Scavenger Hunt Surprise
Just before entering the attraction, a staff member asked a simple question.
"Would you like to do the scavenger hunt?"
Of course, we said yes.
What initially seemed like a simple museum visit suddenly became an interactive challenge.
Each participant received a scavenger hunt sheet filled with clues and questions.
The challenge encouraged us to pay close attention to details throughout the attraction.
At first, it seemed straightforward.
It wasn't.
Questions required observation.
Patience.
Teamwork.
And occasionally a second opinion.
Without realizing it, everyone immediately began working together.
The scavenger hunt transformed strangers into teammates.
Exploring One of the World's Most Amazing Model Railroads
Northlandz is truly remarkable.
Covering more than 50,000 square feet, it contains countless miniature scenes, mountains, tunnels, bridges, towns, rail yards, and trains.
Many people are surprised to learn that Northlandz once held the Guinness World Record for the world's longest model railroad.
Although another attraction eventually surpassed it, Northlandz remains one of the most impressive model railroad experiences anywhere.
As we explored the exhibit, we encountered:
- Massive mountain ranges
- Tiny villages
- Busy city scenes
- Railroad crossings
- Industrial areas
- Beautiful landscapes
Every turn revealed something new.
The craftsmanship was extraordinary.
No matter where you looked, there was another fascinating detail waiting to be discovered.
Shared Interests Create Real Connections
One of the most rewarding aspects of the day was listening to everyone's stories.
As we walked through the exhibits, conversations naturally developed around trains and childhood memories.
Some members shared stories about train sets they owned growing up.
Others talked about family vacations involving rail travel.
A few discussed engineering and transportation history.
Many enjoyed hearing everyone else's experiences.
This is one reason shared-interest activities are so powerful.
People may initially attend because of a common interest.
They often leave with something much more valuable.
Friendships.
Many men who join our community have previously read articles such as "Why High-Quality Gay Men in New Jersey Are Choosing Real Community" or explored our growing friendship-first community for gay men in Bergen County. What they discover at events like this is that those ideas are not just words on a website.
They are happening in real life.
Interactive Exhibits Bring the Attraction to Life
One feature everyone particularly enjoyed was the interactive elements installed throughout the attraction.
Buttons located throughout the exhibit activated sounds, animations, and special effects.
A train whistle here.
Movement there.
Surprises everywhere.
The interactive displays encouraged us to slow down and fully engage with the experience.
People constantly pointed things out to each other.
Someone would discover something hidden.
Someone else would share another observation.
Every discovery became an opportunity for conversation.
Every conversation became another opportunity to strengthen connections.
Teamwork Through the Scavenger Hunt
As the scavenger hunt progressed, teamwork became increasingly important.
Nobody wanted to miss a clue.
Everyone wanted to complete the challenge.
Questions asked us to locate letters, signs, buildings, and hidden details throughout the attraction.
People compared answers.
Double checked observations.
Collaborated continuously.
Without even realizing it, we were practicing one of the most important skills involved in building friendships.
Working together.
Sometimes friendships begin with major life events.
More often, they begin through dozens of small interactions that gradually build trust.
The scavenger hunt provided plenty of those moments.
The Prize at the End
After nearly a mile of walking and solving clues, we finally completed our scavenger hunt sheets.
Everyone gathered around the front desk as the staff reviewed our answers.
The anticipation was genuine.
Had we found everything?
Did we miss anything?
Then came the announcement.
Everyone had won.
Our reward was a complimentary mug from the gift shop.
What followed was surprisingly entertaining.
People carefully examined each mug.
Compared designs.
Considered colors.
Discussed favorites.
Even selecting a mug became part of the shared experience.
Lunch, Conversation, and Community
After completing the attraction, we returned to our private room for lunch.
Pizza arrived.
Buffalo wings followed.
Sauces were sampled.
Stories continued.
The lunch portion of the event reinforced an important principle.
Activities create opportunities.
Conversations create friendships.
People shared stories about careers, hobbies, travel, family, and life experiences.
Some attendees arrived knowing nobody.
By the end of lunch, they were actively participating in conversations and building connections.
That transformation is one of the most rewarding aspects of organizing events.
Many people discover us after reading articles about gay social activities in North Jersey beyond bars and apps. Events like this demonstrate exactly what those alternatives can look like.
Celebrating Two Years of Garden State Gay Socials
The timing of the trip made it even more meaningful.
Just days before our second anniversary, we celebrated another milestone for Garden State Gay Socials.
A beautiful buttercream cake awaited us.
Half vanilla.
Half chocolate.
Every slice was delicious.
As dessert was served, conversations continued throughout the room.
People reflected on previous events.
Shared stories.
Discussed future adventures.
Talked about friendships they had developed through the organization.
Moments like these remind us how far we have come.
Why Small Group Events Work
One thing that consistently differentiates Garden State Gay Socials is our emphasis on meaningful interactions.
While large events certainly have their place, smaller gatherings often create better opportunities for conversation.
People have time to talk.
Time to listen.
Time to learn about each other.
Many members appreciate this approach after reading articles such as Why Gay Men Feel More Comfortable in Small Groups Than Large Events, Low-Pressure Gay Social Spaces, and Real Community.
The reason is simple.
Small groups allow relationships to develop naturally.
Looking Ahead
The Northlandz trip was much more than a visit to a remarkable attraction.
It was another example of how shared experiences help build community.
Looking ahead, Garden State Gay Socials will continue creating opportunities for gay men to connect through memorable adventures.
Plans include:
- Additional day trips
- More hikes
- Breakfast gatherings
- Dinner events
- Ice cream socials
